If you are looking for the perfect gift idea for a 7-year-old boy, you’ve come to the right place! I’m a mom of five (3 boys + 2 girls) three boys and I’m learned a lot along the way…including the best toys and products to gift the 7-year-old on your list.
I don’t know what it is about 7-year-old boys, but they are kind of my favorite. They are still young enough to play and be silly, but are old enough that are starting to be able to do things more independently. They are so much fun!
In all of my gift guides I strive to bring you ideas that are thoughtful, useful and not the same gift ideas that you see everywhere else. I consider myself an expert on gifts for kids, boys and girls, because I’ve been doing this mom thing for 17 years. 🙂
Without further ado, here are some gift ideas that the 7-year-old boy on your list will love, whether it is for his birthday, Christmas, or just because.
Toys for a 7-year-old that help encourage Open-Ended play
The best kinds of gifts provide hours of fun and can be used in multiple ways. Some people call these types of products Open Ended play. They also benefit grown-ups because these products will help your child play independently. Here are some open ended play gift ideas.
A blanket fort for kids can be a camping tent, a pirate ship or even a spaceship! This fun blanket fort kit is portable and durable.
My boys have spent hours outside exploring and this outdoor exploration kit would be an amazing gift for a little boy! It has binoculars, a flashlight, a bug catcher and a magnifying glass. I can see many hours of open play happening with this kit!
Little boys almost universally love cars…and a 7-year-old will be able to take it to the next level and design cool tracks. We love these buildable car tracks at our house…they are easy to manipulate and set up and provide hours of open ended play. This set is dinosaur centric and includes some dino toys as well.
Imaginary play gifts for a 7-year-old boy
7-year-old boys still enjoy imaginary play and it should definitely be encouraged! Here are some fun gifts that will help them have fun imagining.
One of my favorite gifts to give boys this age is a Pirate Kit, including a spotting scope. These scopes are high quality and have held up for years with my boys.
The outdoors is another way to inspire imaginary play. You can check out this post full of camping/outdoors toys. Dinosaurs are GREAT for learning and imagining! I’ve had three dino-obsesed boys and share all of my favorite dinosaur toys in this post.
The Best Ride on Toys for a 7-year-old Boy
If you have a 7-year-old you know that they are FULL of energy. These ride-on toys are a great gift idea to get them outside and moving. Here are some of my boys’ favorites.
Our Y Flicker Scooter is one of the most used outdoor toys in our house. Kids younger than 7 can use it, but 7-year-olds are kind of the sweet spot for this toy. Super fun!
This lightweight and foldable scooter is electric! It can go up to 8.7 mph and is kick start operated…the harder your kick, the faster it goes. Super easy for kids to operate, my 7-year-old loves to zip around on his electric scooter.
Another family favorite, the Razor RipRider is awesome because it drifts and turns. It is low down so even though it is spinny, it isn’t dangerous, making this the perfect gift for a 7-year-old boy.
Active Outdoor toys that 7-year-old boys will love
Here are some other great products that are amazing gifts to encourage your 7-year-old boy to be active outside.
Although you don’t see walking stilts as often as you used to, my kids LOVE being tall and walking around!
If you have trees that can support a slackline, your 7-year-old boy will LOVE his own Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course! Hours of fun and tons of physical movement.
Toys to help your 7-year-old boy be active inside
These gifts are great for a 7-year-old when it is too cold or too hot outside.
First up, not only will a balance board keep your boy moving, he will also get a strong core! This is a fun and useful gift for a little boy.
This is one of the BEST gifts we ever purchased. An Indoor doorway Gym Playground. It hooks into the doorway and has attachments including a swing, rings, a ladder and a rope.
Another super fun game that can be played indoors and keep your kid moving…Ultra Dash has five colored targets and an electronic “tagger.” You place the colored targets around the room around the room and the tagger flashes a color that you then have to race and tag. There are three different game play versions and this can be played by an individual or a group.
Technology gifts for a 7-year-old boy
Like it or not, tech is a part of our kids’ lives. Here are some gift ideas for the little techie on your gift list.
We love the Kindle Fire Tablet in our house for many reasons. Kids love it because they will be able to watch shows, play games and read books. I love it because the kids version comes with a 2-year no questions asked guarantee (if it is broken, they’ll send you a new one!) AND there are ways to help keep limits on your kids’ screen time. It is also a great deal! The mid-price range Kindle Fire is the one I would choose for a 7 year old…The newest one has bigger screen and more memory, but the mid range one (linked here) will be plenty of memory and screen for a 7-year-old boy.
Another kid fav at our house are Amazon Echo Dots. There are super fun games, timers, music and STORY TIME. My kids listen to Amazon Story Time or Disney Story Time every night on their Echo Dot (with a sleep timer so it turns off automatically). They love being able to ask Alexa questions and I love that I can make announcements via my phone like “Everyone come help me unload groceries.” Seriously an amazing little tech gadget that your 7-year-old will love.
If you have a budding reader in your home, I highly recommend the basic Amazon Kindle Kids Edition as a great gift! Being able to download eBooks for free from our local library has really helped fan the flame of reading at our house. My kids love reading on their Kindles, and I love anything that helps encourage that reading! The difference between a Kindle and a Kindle Fire is that the Kindle is made specifically for reading. It is light weight, only has buttons for turning pages and is much easier on kids’ eyes. The Kindle Fire Tablet is a tablet with access to shows, games, apps etc. The Kindle Kids Edition comes with the same amazing 2 year guarantee as the Fire and also gives kids all of the Harry Potter books through Freetime+.
The Best Books for 7-year-old Boys
I love to gift books whenever possible, because a love of reading is a gift in of itself! Here are some books that a 7-year-old boy will love.
My sons have loved these books right around age seven. Bad Guys is a super funny little series about “bad guys” trying to do good!
Killer Koalas from Outer Space: Andy Griffiths is an author made for boys…funny, silly and sometimes potty-centric, all of his books have my 7-year-old rolling with laughter.
Could there be any better book to give a 7-year-old than “Awesome Jokes that Every 7-Year-Old should know?” Boys this age love to joke and be funny and this book is filled with (appropriate) jokes they will love to re-tell.
Big ticket Gift Ideas for 7-year-old Boys
If you need a bigger gift for a big occasion, these “big ticket” gift ideas for a 7-year-old boy will fit the bill.
An entry-level point and shoot camera makes a great gift for a 7-year-old boy. Even if they don’t print a single picture, they will love capturing beautiful pictures with their very own camera.
A Y-Flickr Scooter looks crazy but is so much fun! It takes a little coordination so it is recommended for ages 7 and up, but my kids do fairly well on it around 6ish. It is powered by quickly pushing your legs back and forth horizontally and it spins in circles as you go. This is always a big hit for kids who haven’t seen one before.
Another amazing and fun toy for 7-year-olds is a Razor RipRider This is like the sitting variation of the Y Flicker. It has caster wheels so as you pedal it spins round and round. My bigger kids usually ride with a sibling standing on the back. Way fun!
Building Toys for 7-year-olds
7-year-old boys still love to build things. Even if they already have the basics (Legos, Tinker Toys etc) there are some cool building toys that you can find that make a great gift.
This book has 365 Lego builds and would make a great gift for a lego lover!
Another great building toy, Dinosaur Building Blocks with a high tech sensor. You boy can build a dinosaur or an alligator that will really walk and move its mouth.
IQ Builder Blocks comes with 164 pieces that can be shaped into tons of different toys, including cars with wheels.
STEM Gifts for a 7-year-old
Every kid LOVES science, I think it is so natural to love questioning and experimenting. Here are some fun Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) toys that my 7-year-old sons have loved!
My DIY STEM Family Challenge Box makes an amazing gift! Check out this post for a list of supplies as well as printable challenges that your 7-year-old can attempt by himself, with friends OR with the whole family. You’ll love that all of the necessary supplies are in one handy box and your boy will LOVE the science experiments!
Next, a SPHERO ball is SO fun and relatively inexpensive! These balls are app controlled (which means your child will need to use your smart phone or an iPad). Basically they are remote controlled balls. There are several different ways to use the app to control the ball. They can do simple coding, play games, make a maze out of tape and run the ball through them and more! The balls change color, can change direction…SO MUCH FUN! My kids from ages 4-12 LOVE playing with SPHERO. A great science/coding gift for kids.
My boys LOVED this Think Fun Roller Coaster Challenge Kit! It has a card that tells you a beginning set up and the extra parts you’ll need, then your child uses those parts to try and build a successful roller coaster to propel a small car down. My 7-year-old needed some help in the beginning with the basic set ups on each card but could do the rest of the building on his own. Highly recommend this one!
7-year-olds will enjoy executing their own science experiments and learning what to do with online videos. It’s like YouTube meets science kit! This Science Experiment Kit will be a huge hit in the gift department.
Art Gifts for 7-year-old Boys
If you have a boy that loves to create, there are some fun gift ideas that you can give them.
This Boys’ Doodle Book is perfect for kids this age because it gives them fun prompts to inspire their drawings.
Another great gift for 7-year-old boys is a Rainbow Loom. A boy this age will have the attention span and dexterity to use the Rainbow Loom to make cool bracelet designs. My boys have all loved their looms right around this age!
Your boy will have tons of fun creating his own models with this air dry clay set. I love that it comes with a book filled with ideas for figures as well as all the tools your 7-year-old boy will need.
Sports gifts for 7-year-old boys
You can’t go wrong with a gift for boys that has to do with sports. Here are some fun sporting gift ideas.
We have this exact Portable Pop-Up Soccer Goal and it has been going strong and sturdy for three years. This is a great set of goals that kids can easily pop open, anchor to the ground and put away! It stores flat and my kids can do ALL of it by themselves. A great gift for a 7-year-old boy who loves soccer!
Sometimes my husband looks at me really strangely when I buy a gift for our boys…and this mini indoor hockey set had him questioning my Gifty Girl identity. However, it was a HUGE hit and my kids haven’t broken anything with it! HAHA! This is for indoor KNEE hockey. The ball is foam and the kids have a blast in our hallway playing hockey games. Super fun gift for a boy around 7-years-old.
I love this sports gift that is kind of a combo between tennis and tetherball. It’s called Swing Ball. This is a portable set (includes rackets or “power bats” ) so you can take it with you to places like the beach or a park. The other bonus of this gift is that it isn’t very likely that the 7-year-old boy on your list will have it! A unique and fun gift!
Superhero Toys for 7 year old boy
A combination of superhero and Nerf gun?! This Black Panther Power Slash Toy would be an amazing gift for a 7-year-old boy!
Marvel Superheroes I Can Do That! Game looks like a great toy for a 7 year old boy. It has 45 activity cards challenges as well as fun superhero accessories. It has amazing reviews!
Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Batman vs. Superman will let your little boy have all the fun of battling with none of the injuries. This classic toy is a favorite of my kids!
The best Video gaming toys for 7 year old boys
7-years-old is a great time to introduce boys to video games. Just make sure to establish limits from the beginning! Here are some great video gaming toys for 7-year-old boys (I rhymed!).
Kids Fire Tablet Pro We have LOVED our Fire Tablets! Kids will be able to download fun games and apps, have access to books and Prime Video shows. Parents will love the parental controls, and the 2-year worry free guarantee. This means that no matter what happens to the device, you can get a brand new one sent to you for free! (And yes, we have used that guarantee with our kids’ Fire Tablets. This also comes with a great case.
The Nintendo 2DS is a handheld video gaming system that will be fun at home or on the go! This is a bit of an investment so consider how responsible your 7-year-old is.
The Nintendo Switch is (in my opinion) the very best gaming system for younger kids.
Room decor gifts for a 7 year old boy
If your 7-year-old already has ALLL the toys, buying some fun products for his room can make a great gift!
A bean bag is comfortable and fun. Your boy will love having his own special spot to sit and it comes in LOTS of colors.
Another fun gift option is a Star Sky Night Lamp. This rotates and projects stars and a moon up on the roof and has a timer!
Turn your little guy’s room into a pretend campsite with a camouflage bed tent! This gift will keep him feeling cozy at night and allow him to have imaginative play during the day.
The best Games to give a 7-year-old boy
Screwball is a game that I grew up playing and my boys have loved as well! Your little boy has to maneuver a metal ball through a course using buttons and switches. There is a clock you can use to race yourself.
Another game that is fun solo is Simon. This is the micro (little) version. The buttons have a light and a musical note and there is a pattern. Your boy has to try and repeat the pattern, and a new note and light happen each time.
Shut the Box is a game that will help your 7-year-old practice math skills without even knowing it! Be the first player to close all of the numbers (shut the box) on your side to win. You roll two dice and then put down the corresponding number flap. You can either add the dice together OR use the individual numbers. So much fun (for kids of lots of ages!).
Classic toys for a 7-year-old Boy
A counting jump rope is a super fun gift idea for an energetic 7-year-old boy. He will love to jump and see how many he can get in a row (without needing to count!)
Has your little guy tried tether ball? So many pros for this classic toy. It doesn’t take up a lot of space, and it can be played solo or with a friend.
A giant bubble kit will give your 7-year-old boy HOURS of fun play. This comes with a wand plus powder to make the best bubble solution.
I hope I’ve inspired you with some great gift ideas for your adorable 7-year-old boy. Looking for other great gift ideas? Check out these posts!
